The story
Wes's 07:00 surgical client has a signed form in the chart — and tells Wes, as the stretcher arrives, that she signed 'because the doctor seemed in a hurry' and still doesn't know what the surgery is for.
Wes works pre-op, where consent is won or lost in the last five minutes. The provider performing the procedure obtains consent — explaining the diagnosis, the procedure, its risks, benefits, and alternatives. The nurse does not give that initial explanation. The nurse's role is to witness the signature, verify the client understood and signed voluntarily, reinforce and clarify what the provider already explained, and — the action that saves licenses — stop the process and notify the provider whenever the client voices confusion, coercion, or new questions. A signature from a sedated client, or from a client who cannot explain the procedure back, is not consent at all.
Story arc
The setup
The chart shows a signed consent; the OR is calling. Wes does his last check: 'Can you tell me in your own words what you're having done today?'
The turn
She can't explain it. She signed under time pressure, after premedication, and her questions were never answered.
The crisis
The OR team is waiting and the schedule is slipping; the pressure to 'just send her' is real.
The save
Wes stops the transfer and notifies the surgeon, who returns, re-explains risks, benefits, and alternatives, answers her questions — and she signs again, awake, unhurried, and able to teach the plan back.
